First out

A new season brings First Occurrences.

On a bicycle this can include:

First ride without leg or arm warmers or jacket.

First realization the green really can be a normal color in nature.

Decide that the hike/bike trail is too crowded.

One of our firsts was last Sunday afternoon.  We rode to Stafford.

An old friend, the Old Wire Road.

We just went to the truck stop on the north side of I-44.  I had forgotten to apply lip balm at home.  A new purchase was decided upon bringing our family total to eight.  I am always within walking distance to lip balm.  As a cyclist I find it a necessity.

We avoided the outer road to the highway.  This road is good and level and allows for some serious speed, but the traffic noise can be hard to bear.

On the way we saw a couple of other cyclists and had just mentioned the lack of spring peepers when at once we heard them!

It seems unfair that you, dear reader, can only be shown the location of the frog chorus.

Going back into a brisk head wind brought Jan to the conclusion that she needed to practice drafting.  The wind was coming from off of the port quarter so she fell in line to the starboard.

I tried to keep a steady pace and we hung in there together for over 2½ miles.

Besides the aforementioned cyclists we had other observers.

These girls were content to watch and not join in the fun.

We got in a little over 18 miles and will continue the practice as long as the weather permits.

These last photo shows garden progress in just two days.

This is the second season for the asparagus. I am not too much of an asparagus fan, but I was excited to see such growth since the weekend.

Jan said the the crop needs a third year before we can really begin to harvest it.  I may end up liking it after all.

Stay happy,

Cows seem VERY interested in cyclists whereas motorists don’t rate a second glance. I don’t know why this should be, but your photo demonstrates the effect.

That’s the second transatlantic blog I’ve read today going on about how lovely it is to cycle in warm weather. It’s just making us feel worse over here. Still, the asparagus looks promising. There is nothing better than freshly picked home grown asparagus with butter.

One of the last things I want to do is make you feel bad! Jan puts the asparagus under the broiler with garlic, etc. I enjoy it, but then I eat it with something else to mask the flavor. Pitiful.

Thanks! I know now where to get my asparagus.
